Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to wrap up summer with a party. Hosting a BBQ and movie night is a simple party that is fun for all ages. Here are a few tips to help you plan a Labor Day party.

Start Planning now:

  • Start preparing your menu. Keep it simple, hot dogs and hamburgers, salad, chips and drinks.
  • Compile your guest list and pick a movie.
  • Pick the location to set up your movie screen. Make sure to choose a location that is not near any lights that could affect the brightness of the movie, such as house lights or street lamps.
  • Send out your BBQ and movie themed invitations.
  • Gather the items you will need to play the movie: the screen, extension cords, speakers, computer and projector.

Day of the party:

  • Purchase the remainder of the food.
  • Set up for the movie.
  • Use tiki torches, lanterns and other soft lighting to make a pathway back to the house. Maybe add some small American Flags between each light as well.
  • Lay out red, white & blue colored pillows and blankets for the kids and chairs for the adults.
  • Set up your food table. The key is to make your food table both festive and functional making everything have a dual purpose. Have fun shaped bowls (maybe shaped like stars) and apothecary jars filled with food and candy. The secret to a well-designed table is making it have different heights, boxes of pasta covered with tablecloths works well. Don’t forget to add some American Flags too.
  • About a ½ hour before the movie start popping the popcorn. Plan for about ¼ cup uncooked popcorn per person.
  • Light some citronella candles and tape some dryer sheets under your food tables to keep bugs at bay.

Simply Top 10 Ways to Use Rose Petals

Simply top 10 Rose Petals.jpg

The rose is one of my favorite flowers. I believe roses are popular because they come in so many colors, are durable and typically available all year round.

Simply Top 10 Ways to Use Rose Petals

1. Scatter the petals around the base of a centerpiece or around the cake. Sometimes I spread the petals thinly or lay out each petal down into the perfect position. Other times I just want an opulent, overflowing look and will scatter them in larger groups.

2. One easy way to use rose petals it to fill a cylinder vase with petals; add water, and the place a floating candle on top. You will need the petals from two roses to fill and 8-inch tall vase.

3. You’ve probably seen rose petals scattered down the aisle with a flower girl. A fun twist would be to make a pattern down the center of the aisle. When guest arrive just seat them from the side aisles instead.

4. To make a rose bowl, fill a short or shallow vase with water then float an open rose in the center. Add petals around it until you have filled all the space to make it look like a giant rose.

5. Float a couple of rose buds in a large cylinder vase filled with water.

6. Make garlands that can be incorporated into your centerpieces, hang them on the backs of chairs or from candelabras with scattered floral cocktails and petals round the base.

7. To create the classic pomander, glue petals on a Styrofoam ball, using colors that coordinate with your event design.

8. You can also make a composite bouquet. Use one open rose in the center, then glue petals around it to give it the look of one giant rose.

9. Use rose petals to garnish a drink. Note: It’s important to remember that there are no regulations on pesticides with flowers so I strongly recommend using only organic flowers for drinks

10. Event outdoors? Try adding rose petals one by one to the inside of an umbrella.

Those are some of my favorite ways to use rose petals. Which one is your favorite? Do you have any other ideas to add?

Last Minute Christmas Gift Idea

I love to do crafts.  I love to make gifts.  And just importantly I love crafts/gifts that are easy to make.

Here is one of those crafts.

Hot Cocoa in a Jar

Mason Jar Hot Cocoa

I made hot cocoa in a jar for a friend.  It was simple and fun to make.  I wanted it to be colorful so I made multiple layers.  I started with dark hot chocolate, the milk hot chocolate, followed by a layer of chocolate chips.

Then I took some small candy canes and broke them up into smaller pieces and added it to the next layer.  To top off the jar I added mini marshmallows.

The lid of the mason jar was gold and I just did not think the color went well.  So I spray painted it a matte silver.  Please make sure to let it air dry outdoors for a day so completely airs out before putting it on the jar.  I also sealed the jar with some plastic wrap before adding the lid.  To add a bit of sparkle I sprinkled on some white glitter in the center of the jar lid.

Add a ribbon and a couple of straws are your jar is ready to go.  I found a free printable on-line to tie it all together.

To complete the gift I added two movie tickets and a box of popcorn.

Last Mintue Gift Idea

No gift is complete without a homemade gift tag.  I little bit of paper, a stamp and some washi tape.

This year I wanted to make my mom something instead of buying her a gift like I do every other year.  I saw this idea while playing around  on the internet and I thought I could make my own version of it.

DIY Peppermint Trays for Christmas

Here is a quick and fun project to add some Christmas cheer to any room or event, Peppermint candies melted and shaped to fit your creativity and needs.

All you have to do is purchase peppermint candies and melt them on wax paper on a cookie sheet in the oven.   Arrange them in any pattern and shape you choose.  Then bake them for 8 minutes at 330 degrees.  Let them cool for about 10 minutes then remove the wax paper.

Here is the before and after results.

Just placed in the oven

I added plastic wrap around my trays that way when I place the cookies on them they do not end up tasting like peppermint.

Once they cool and harden they are very fragile like glass.  They break very easily. Also note the longer you bake them the more they will melt and the thinner they become.

I’ll post photos of them in use at a Christmas party to show them in all their glory.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Enjoy.

DIY Mason Jar Candles

It has been a very long time since I have posted anything.  Hopefully, someone out there will love this idea project.  It is a great way to cut costs for outdoor parties or even weddings.  With the heat still staying strong in Southern California is seems at though outdoor parties are still a “hot” topic.  I found this idea from another blog here

The materials you will need are:

  • Soy wax flakes. These are commonly used in making scented candles and are sold in craft stores or Amazon. You can use other wax, but soy is affordable, typically has a longer burn time than other waxes and has some other beneficial qualities (all-natural, renewable, etc.).
  • Canning jars. You can purchased a dozen 8 ounce jars from Wal Mart for around $8.
  • Wicks and Tabs. You can find these on Amazon, eBay and at your craft stores. You’ll want your wicks to be a bit longer than your candle holder is tall.

The tools you will need are:

  • Scissors:For cutting the wicks to size
  • Double Boiler: For melting the wax. I don’t have an actual double boiler, so I just get a large pot, fill it about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way with water, and then nest a slightly smaller pot inside.
  • A Pouring Device: I just used a pyrex measuring cup.
  • Protective Gloves: We’ll be using boiling water and hot wax, so you want to keep you hands safe.

Still want more insturctions.  Check out the link to the blog above.

Enjoy your new found candle making skills.

Daisies and Donuts

I found this party idea from http://lilluna.com/ and just had to pass it along.

{Cupcake Toppers}

{Glazed Donut Muffins in back and had donut holes in the Chevron Bitty Bags}

There were LOTS of donuts. :)

And no worries, we were sure to serve milk with the donuts – a MUST! Also attached straws and flags.

DIY: July 4th Lanterns

Today’s DIY project is for the 4th of July and kid friendly.  Thank you Tiny Prints.

Supplies

  • Red, white and blue tissue paper
  • Mod Podge and brush
  • Mason jars
  • Votive candles
  • Festive ribbon

Step 1: Trim Your Tissue

Cut your tissue paper up into the shapes of your choice. Long vertical strips that run the length of the jar or squares for a fun layered look both work well.

Step 2: Paint and Apply

Use your mod podge and brush to lightly coat the outside of each jar. Then, gently apply your tissue paper strips in your favorite arrangement. Lastly, make sure to leave ample time for drying (at least an hour or two).

Step 3: Tie and Display

Add your ribbon at the top, tie a bow, put a candle in the bottom and… voila! Display your lanterns as dining centerpieces, line them down the sidewalk or put them inside for cute tabletop decor.

And don’t forget to order July 4th invitations to gather everyone together!

Get Hitched Like “Brangelina”!

On March 31st, Brad and Angelina finally tied the knot! Here are some tips to help you have a movie star quality wedding too.

TIPS and SUGGESTIONS:

* Color Me Pink! Want to include your kids in the wedding festivities? Put their creativity to use and have them draw pictures of what they think love is.  Take their designs and create customized invitations for your big day.  The kids will love being involved in the planning and this will be one doodle you will be sure to frame!

* Gifts That Keep Giving! Follow in “Brangelina’s” footsteps and become humanitarians!  Instead of accepting gifts, have your guests donate to a charity of your choice.  It might be your big day, but you can make someone else’s dreams come true!  Another option is to donate money on your guests’ behalf instead of giving out favors!

* Best of Both Worlds! Do you and your future spouse come from different backgrounds?  Have your reception reflect both of your worlds!  Maybe décor is LA chic, but serve up your guests some Southern, home style cooking! It is a fabulous and easy way to customize and personalize your swanky soiree.

* Lets Play Dress Up! Get your kids excited about the love-filled day!  Let them be their own stylist!  Encourage their fashionista side and let them choose their attire for the wedding.  Want it to fit in with your color scheme? Give them colors to work with and see what they create! If they are comfortable and excited about what they are wearing, they will strut down the aisle like a catwalk!  The photographer will also have a ball capturing these special moments.

* Location! Location! Location! Have a truly magical day by hosting the ceremony and reception at your family home.  This is such an easy way to make guests feel like they are a part of something special and intimate.  Your kids will have the best time watching the house and backyard get transformed into the wedding you always imagined.  Years later, you will still be able to look into your backyard and remember where you said, “I do.”

* Cocktails and Mocktails! The big toast at the reception is always a highlight of the night! Get everyone involved, 21 or not!  Kids can have “mocktails” to cheers with, a non-alcoholic version of what the “big kids” are drinking.  They will feel important and included when the big moment arrives!   As for the adults, their specialty cocktails can be special and specific to the couple.  Perhaps the location of where they met or got engaged! If they met at a baseball game serve up a cotton candy martini and call it a “double play martini!”

FACTS & FIGURES:

*Angelina has the geographical coordinates of the places of birth for each of her children.
