While throwing fathers-to-be their own “man showers” is a growing trend, so are showers that honor an expectant couple together by inviting their closest female and male friends. “To throw a great co-ed baby showers, you have to get rid of the kitsch,” Lauren Haselberger, food and beverage manager at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, Illinois says. “The silly, frou-frou, run-of-the-mill games, like ‘guess the number of pacifiers in the jar’ or baby gift bingo aren’t gonna fly as well in a mixed crowd. Whatever you would do for a regular social gathering with friends is what you’ll want to do at a co-ed baby shower.”

Here, your guide to throwing the ultimate shower both sexes will enjoy.

The Invitations:

  1. Keep the guest list balanced by inviting the guys who are closest to both the mom- and dad-to-be. Future grandfathers, uncles, and college buddies alike! And when you address the invites to couples, include names of both wife and husband.
  2. From the get-go, you want to set a tone that speaks to all your invitees, so gender-neutral colors and themes is best. A photo of the happy expectant couple is a nice touch. (Both TinyPrints.com or SimplytoImpress.com have couples’ baby shower sections.)
  3. Watching the wording of the invitations can be helpful, too. Instead of a “shower,” you could call it a “celebration.” Refer to both parents as your guests of honor.
  4. To prevent the event from erring too pink, frilly, or feminine in tone, consider a general party theme, like a luau, BBQ, or sports teams the parents-to-be root for.

The Food:

“‘Baby’-sized finger foods, such as little quiches, mini-cupcakes, or tiny cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, may be old standbys at traditional baby showers, but for a co-ed crowd, it’s best to get away from that,” says Haselberger. A few recommendations …

  1. Chicken wings: Not just loved and devoured by guests on Super Bowl Sunday!
  2. Pizza: A similar party staple beloved by the majority of guests at any party.
  3. Chips and dip: No fail hit for any party. Crowd-pleasing alternatives: Pita chips and hummus, crudite and dip, guacamole, etc.
  4. Alcohol, but specifically … beer: This is the key to pleasing the guys, as those who’ve jumped on the co-ed shower bandwagon can attest.
  5. Mocktails: For the mom-to-be and any other expectant moms in attendance.
  6. Taco bar: A taco bar — or if you’re doing a catered event, maybe even a taco truck — sets up a natural opportunity for mixing and mingling, notes Courtney Lutkus, event planner and owner of Simply Radiant Events in Southern California. It also allows guests to customize their meal.

The Entertainment:

“Traditional baby games may have men running for the door and other games simply won’t work,” explains Lutkus. “However, games both men and women enjoy can be a great icebreaker.” Still, giving guests the ability to opt in or out of games may work best for a co-ed group, as there will be those who are more interested in sticking with talking and mingling. If you do decide to play games, a few ideas:

  1. Guess the Beer in the Baby Bottle: Buy baby bottles and fill them with six different beers. Post a list with the names of the possibilities, and ask guests to guess which is which.
  2. Diaper decorating contest: Everyone can show off their artistic side — or sense of humor — by drawing with Sharpies on diapers for the newborn. Parents-to-be will love to look back on the messages and pictures.
  3. Diaper raffle: Who doesn’t want to win a raffle? “Ask everyone to bring a bag of diapers, and if they do, they get a raffle ticket to win a prize,” recommends Lutkus. You’ll want to pick a prize that’s suited both for men and women, of course, like an iTunes or restaurant gift card.

The Favors:

Baby bottles filled with jelly beans might not be your best bet in this case. A few other options:

  1. Candy or cookies: Think personalized candy bars. One popular option: Hershey bars with the “HE” colored blue, if the couple is expecting a boy, or “SHE” colored in pink, if the couple is expecting a girl. Brownies or customized cookies are always winners, too.
  2. More beer and wine: Those who have successfully thrown co-ed baby showers say favors like 40s of specialty beer and bottles of wine were a hit with guests.
  3. Seeds: Lutkus recommends a packet of seeds for everyone to take home and plant once the baby is born, as it serves as a constant reminder of the new little addition to the world.

Labor Day Party Planning

End of Summer BBQ and Movie Night

Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to wrap up summer with a party. Hosting a BBQ and movie night is a simple party that is fun for all ages. Here are a few tips to help you plan a Labor Day party.

Start Planning now:

  • Start preparing your menu. Keep it simple, hot dogs and hamburgers, salad, chips and drinks.
  • Compile your guest list and pick a movie.
  • Pick the location to set up your movie screen. Make sure to choose a location that is not near any lights that could affect the brightness of the movie, such as house lights or street lamps.
  • Send out your BBQ and movie themed invitations.
  • Gather the items you will need to play the movie: the screen, extension cords, speakers, computer and projector.

Day of the party:

 

  • Purchase the remainder of the food.
  • Set up for the movie.
  • Use tiki torches, lanterns and other soft lighting to make a pathway back to the house. Maybe add some small American Flags between each light as well.
  • Lay out red, white & blue colored pillows and blankets for the kids and chairs for the adults.
  • Set up your food table. The key is to make your food table both festive and functional making everything have a dual purpose. Have fun shaped bowls (maybe shaped like stars) and apothecary jars filled with food and candy. The secret to a well-designed table is making it have different heights, boxes of pasta covered with tablecloths works well. Don’t forget to add some American Flags too.
  • About a ½ hour before the movie start popping the popcorn. Plan for about ¼ cup uncooked popcorn per person.
  • Light some citronella candles and tape some dryer sheets under your food tables to keep bugs at bay.

Simply 10 Ten DIY Wedding Ideas Simply Radiant Events

With the invention of Pinterest and the Internet DIY is everywhere!  I have seen so many brides interested in  saving money and want that extra special homemade touch to their wedding.  I am all for saving money and doing things yourself.  However, please just note that is very easy to come up with a bunch of ideas and projects for your wedding and run out of time.  Just be mindful of what you choose to make for your wedding that you will have enough time to complete the project.  If you start running out of time make sure to ask your wedding planner to lend a helping hand to alleviate some of the stress.

Some of these ideas don’t even need to necessary be for weddings, some can be used for other events as well.

Here are  the Simply Top 10 DIY wedding Ideas that I personally have seen in the weddings that I helped plan and coordinate.

1. DIY Wedding Programs

This bride used some craft paper and printed everything on her computer then sewed them up with her sewing machine.  Very simple and very cute.

2. DIY Wedding Favors

This bride took wine glasses then painted the base with chalkboard paint. Inside the classes were come custom matches and a piece of chalk to write your name on your wine glass.

3. DIY Thank you Cards

This couple took this picture on their wedding day then inserted the photo into cards…BAM instant thank you cards!

4. DIY Guest Book

This couple used their engagement photos and turned it into a photo book.  They left every other page blank so their guests could sign their marriage wishes for the couple.

5. DIY Light Up Initials

Theses letters were bought at a local craft store.  Then they drilled wholes into the letters and placed in some lights.  Very fun way to add some light and décor for an outdoor reception.

6.  DIY Chalkboard Signs

This bride is a teacher so she incorporated chalkboard signs all throughout their wedding.

7. DIY  Escort Cards

This couple loved their dog and had little touches of their Golden Retriever throughout their reception.  Even their escort cards were dog bones they printed out at home and tacked on a tack board.

8.  DIY Photo Booth

This couple purchased some props, a backdrop and some disposable cameras.  Guests were able to use the cameras at the photo booth and throughout the reception to take photos.  Any leftover cameras they took with them on their honeymoon.

9.  Front Entrance Décor

Initials, some greenery and some floral wire can go a long way.  Check out this adorable sign!

Aside from your wedding venue, the catering bill will probably be the next largest budget item. Catering costs are usually presented as “per-person” (pp) charges. Make sure to ask if the per person charge includes tax, service charge, gratuities, drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and setup. Bring your calculator to crunch the numbers; if needed.

The rose is one of my favorite flowers. I believe roses are popular because they come in so many colors, are durable and typically available all year round.

1. Scatter the petals around the base of a centerpiece or around the cake. Sometimes I spread the petals thinly or lay out each petal down into the perfect position. Other times I just want an opulent, overflowing look and will scatter them in larger groups.

2. One easy way to use rose petals it to fill a cylinder vase with petals; add water, and the place a floating candle on top. You will need the petals from two roses to fill and 8-inch tall vase.

3. You’ve probably seen rose petals scattered down the aisle with a flower girl. A fun twist would be to make a pattern down the center of the aisle. When guest arrive just seat them from the side aisles instead.

4. To make a rose bowl, fill a short or shallow vase with water then float an open rose in the center. Add petals around it until you have filled all the space to make it look like a giant rose.

5. Float a couple of rose buds in a large cylinder vase filled with water.

6. Make garlands that can be incorporated into your centerpieces, hang them on the backs of chairs or from candelabras with scattered floral cocktails and petals round the base.

7. To create the classic pomander, glue petals on a Styrofoam ball, using colors that coordinate with your event design.

8. You can also make a composite bouquet. Use one open rose in the center, then glue petals around it to give it the look of one giant rose.

9. Use rose petals to garnish a drink. Note: It’s important to remember that there are no regulations on pesticides with flowers so I strongly recommend using only organic flowers for drinks

10. Event outdoors? Try adding rose petals one by one to the inside of an umbrella.
