Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to wrap up summer with a party. Hosting a BBQ and movie night is a simple party that is fun for all ages. Here are a few tips to help you plan a Labor Day party.

Start Planning now:

  • Start preparing your menu. Keep it simple, hot dogs and hamburgers, salad, chips and drinks.
  • Compile your guest list and pick a movie.
  • Pick the location to set up your movie screen. Make sure to choose a location that is not near any lights that could affect the brightness of the movie, such as house lights or street lamps.
  • Send out your BBQ and movie themed invitations.
  • Gather the items you will need to play the movie: the screen, extension cords, speakers, computer and projector.

Day of the party:

  • Purchase the remainder of the food.
  • Set up for the movie.
  • Use tiki torches, lanterns and other soft lighting to make a pathway back to the house. Maybe add some small American Flags between each light as well.
  • Lay out red, white & blue colored pillows and blankets for the kids and chairs for the adults.
  • Set up your food table. The key is to make your food table both festive and functional making everything have a dual purpose. Have fun shaped bowls (maybe shaped like stars) and apothecary jars filled with food and candy. The secret to a well-designed table is making it have different heights, boxes of pasta covered with tablecloths works well. Don’t forget to add some American Flags too.
  • About a ½ hour before the movie start popping the popcorn. Plan for about ¼ cup uncooked popcorn per person.
  • Light some citronella candles and tape some dryer sheets under your food tables to keep bugs at bay.

The Perfect Wedding Dress for your Body Type

Today we welcome a guest blogger, Sofia Angeli.

Sofia Angeli is a PR & communications consultant for companies in various industries. In particular, she brings her writing skills and passion for travel, culture, arts and lifestyle, including wedding planning and engagement rings, to the online world.

The Perfect Wedding Dress for your Body Type

A woman’s wedding day is considered one of the most important milestones in her life. As much as the celebration is about the union of two lives becoming one, this day is all about the bride. And her fashion is almost always the headline of this big day. It’s probably the most anticipated element in every wedding. Whether they admit it or not, even male guests check out what the bride is wearing.

This is why the wedding dress is a crucial decision that every bride stresses about. It has to have the best fit, the right kind of cut, and the perfect shade. The first two elements can be quite challenging, especially if the wearer has no idea about what flatters her body the most.

This article focuses on choosing the best cut and design for the most common body types. Interested? Keep reading.

1.  The Pear Shape – Ladies who are bottom-heavy must look for dresses that slowly flare out, forming an A from the waist down to the floor. This highlights the midsection of the torso and takes away the focus from the hips and thighs. Experts recommend the use of sturdy fabrics like duchesse satin as well as taffeta, because they don’t hug the body. To accentuate the slender upper body, brides must consider a thin-strapped bodice and a V-neckline.

2.  The Apple Shape – For ladies who are top-heavy, a dress that cinches in the narrowest area of the waist is best. The dress, ideally, must flare out into an A-shape. A bodice with plenty of texture like lace or other embellishments will give just the right fit and a corset-like appearance. A deep V-neckline is also great for the apple-shaped lady. Try to avoid trumpet-style dresses since these only emphasize the widest part of the body.

3.  The Busty – They say that when you have it, flaunt it!  For the busty gal’s wedding day, a classy take can be done by opting for a scooped neckline. This brightens up the face and shows off the décolletage without giving too much away. If you’re interested in a strapless dress, choose one with just a slight dip in the neckline, such as a sweetheart, instead of a style that goes straight across the chest. Emphasize the focal areas by using fabric with a slight sheen.

4.  The Plus-Size – Women who are curvaceous look best in dresses with an empire cut. The flow of the dress with this cut begins under the bust into a floor length A-line. When choosing the design, make sure the empire seam doesn’t begin on the bust and isn’t pleated. This design can play up the shape, so make sure it fits perfectly. Opt for fabrics that provide structure instead of those that cling. And for a more romantic look, simply add an embellished tulle overlay.

5.  The Petite – Sheer trumpet-shaped dresses flowing into an A-line are ideal. Consider designs where the cut goes just above your natural waistline to give the illusion of longer legs. The fabric and ornamentation can pretty much be anything the bride desires as long as the size is controlled. Petite women should avoid anything oversized. They should also steer clear of dresses that have dropped waists or calf-length hems since these make can make them look even shorter.

Don’t be shy or scared to look in the mirror and assess your body type before shopping for your wedding wardrobe. It’s also the time to be bold in trying on dresses to see for yourself which one will look perfect on you. Be the beautiful and confident bride you want to be when you wear that perfect dress on your big day.

Great article Sofia to get is us started with 2014!  Happy Planning.

4th of July Party Theme

4th of July is right around the corner.  Have you stared to preparing your party plans yet?  If not, here are some ideas to give you a jump start.

Recently, I had the honor of being published in Everyday Party Magazine for my 4th of July themed party design so, I though I would share a few photos of the party I created.  The printables I used were created by Chickabug.

Picnics are always fun because they are a simple party,  yet they still allow you to bring out a little bit of  your creativity.

Richard Nixion Library

Last month I had the privilege of attending a Lunch and Learn event put on the by Wedding Wire at the Richard Nixon Library for event professionals.

Apparently I was not the only one to get the memo of the event.

This is what the hall looks like without it full of people.

The food was amazing.

Food Provided by Creme do la Creme

While in the food line I met a great girl and we hit it off and spent the rest of the afternoon meeting and greeting new people together.

If you ever get a chance to visit the Richard Nixon Library you will not be disappointed.  Nestled in the heart of Yorba Linda it is a real gem and a great place to visit or have an event.

Ribs, Pigs & Watermelons

This post is long overdue, but better later than never….

August 17-19, 2012, Ribs, Pigs & Watermelons took place outside the Westminster Mall.

All money raised was to benefit American Family Housing a local shelter for the homeless.  To learn more about the shelter visit their website, www.afhusa.org.

It was three days of food, fun, games, BBQ and watermelon.

I guess we should start it out with me on the microphone at the cook’s meeting.  One of the main features of the event is a pro BBQ competition.  So, before the competition can begin we had a cook’s meeting going over all the ins and outs.

After the cook’s meeting,  the teams were off cooking more meat than you can imagine.  Including a whole roasted pig….

To pair with the meat samplings we had watermelon and lots of it.  We even had watermelon eating contests and watermelon carving.

A few other fun things to mention….

Laker Girls

Westminster Fire Department

Saturday evening was time to hand out trophies to all the teams.

Check these out!

And the Grand Champion team of the BBQ is….

What would a festival be without music?  We had lots of music of all types.

Maureen and the Mercury 5 was just one of the bands that played at the festival.

This is just a cute dog I had to get a photo of.

There are more photos on my facebook page so make sure to head over there to check them out.

Also, don’t forget to visit American Family Housing’s website and see how you can help those who are less fortunate.

I hope you enjoyed my long overdue post and save the date for next year August 2013 Ribs, Pigs & Watermelons will be back again next year.

DIY Mason Jar Candles

It has been a very long time since I have posted anything.  Hopefully, someone out there will love this idea project.  It is a great way to cut costs for outdoor parties or even weddings.  With the heat still staying strong in Southern California is seems at though outdoor parties are still a “hot” topic.  I found this idea from another blog here

The materials you will need are:

  • Soy wax flakes. These are commonly used in making scented candles and are sold in craft stores or Amazon. You can use other wax, but soy is affordable, typically has a longer burn time than other waxes and has some other beneficial qualities (all-natural, renewable, etc.).
  • Canning jars. You can purchased a dozen 8 ounce jars from Wal Mart for around $8.
  • Wicks and Tabs. You can find these on Amazon, eBay and at your craft stores. You’ll want your wicks to be a bit longer than your candle holder is tall.

The tools you will need are:

  • Scissors:For cutting the wicks to size
  • Double Boiler: For melting the wax. I don’t have an actual double boiler, so I just get a large pot, fill it about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way with water, and then nest a slightly smaller pot inside.
  • A Pouring Device: I just used a pyrex measuring cup.
  • Protective Gloves: We’ll be using boiling water and hot wax, so you want to keep you hands safe.

Still want more insturctions.  Check out the link to the blog above.

Enjoy your new found candle making skills.
